Viola R. Wetherell 87, of Stewardson, IL, passed away at 7:30 PM Monday August 20, 2012 in her home.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday August 24, 2012 in Faith Lutheran Church in Shumway. Pastor Jason Rensner will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 PM Thursday August 23, 2012 in the Church and one hour before the service on Friday in the Church.Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Shumway.Memorials may be made in Viola’s honor to A.R.C., E.A.S.T.E.R Program (Effingham Area Special Teaching Everyday Religion), Faith Cemetery or Trinity Cemetery.Arrangements are by Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson, IL
Viola was born Feb. 2, 1925 near Shumway the daughter of Virgil and Minnie Schultz Huffmaster.
She married Delano L. “Bud” Wetherell on June 3, 1945 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shumway, IL
Viola was a graduate of Stewardson High School in the Class of 1943.
For 24 years she was a Postal Clerk and for 10 years was the Postmaster of Shumway, IL.
She was a long time active member of Faith Lutheran Church of Shumway, IL and held many positions and offices.She taught Sunday School for 46 years.For 62 years she participated in the Ladies Aid, holding every office including several District Offices.She sang in the church choir for 56 years.
She was an avid supporter of A.R.C. Community Support Systems.For over 30 years she participated in E.A.S.T.E.R. teaching religious classes for persons with mental disabilities.
She was a 4-H leader for over 37 years advising the Topnotchers while setting a great example for them to follow.
Viola assisted the blind for over 27 years as a Braille bible worker.
She continued to be a member, for 32 years, of N.A.R.F.E.(Retired Postal Workers), and was a mentor and pen pal to young school children.
She was a sports enthusiast.For over ten years Viola was a fast pitch softball catcher until she became pregnant with her fifth child.
During her 87 years, she was a child of Christ.She was a loving wife, daughter, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend to countless others.
Surviving are her children: Sue Jacobs of Altamont, IL, Duane Wetherell of Effingham, Betty Jo Wetherell of Washington, IA, Dale Wetherell and wife Diane of Stewardson, IL and Don Wetherell and wife Tammy of Stewardson; grandchildren: Beth Smith and husbandJerry, David Wetherell and wife Laura, Zach Wetherelland wife Brittney, Luke Wetherell and wife Lauren and Philip Wetherell; great grandchildren: Riley Smith, Jenna Smith, Tyler Wetherell, Dylan Wetherell, Wyatt Wetherell, Karly Wetherell, Bentley Wetherell, Samuel Wetherell and William Wetherell; sister Edna Motte of Marceline, MO, six sisters-in-laws and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband. parents, grandson Micah Wetherell, great grandson Logan Smith, son-in-law Larry Jacobs; sisters: Marjorie Reynolds and a sister in infancy, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Norman Motte, Harold “Spud” Reynolds, and Elwin and Eileen Wetherell.
