Jimmy L. (Jim) Smith, 62, of Cowden passed away at 10:15 p.m. Sunday (July 26, 2015) surrounded by his family at his residence,
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Cowden Christian Church with Rev. Darrell Hinkle officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon. Arrangements are by Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Cowden. Memorials may be made to HSHS Home Care and Hospice of Southern Illinois or Crossroads Cancer Center, Effingham.
Jim was born July 24, 1953 in Mattoon the son of Richard and Evelyn (Beck) Smith. He married Connie D. Oeltjen August 7, 1977 in Mattoon.
He graduated from Mattoon High School in 1971 and retired from International Paper in 2008 after 30 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, camping, working in his yard and helping out family and friends. He was especially fond of his cats, Baby and Princess
Surviving are his wife, Connie; son Kevin Smith (special friend, Gayla McDowell) of Mattoon; grandchildren, Kelsie and Kelso Smith of Mattoon; brothers, Ed Smith (Pam) of Pigeon Forge, TN and Dennis Smith of Mattoon; sister, Tammy Weber (Carl) of Mattoon; mother-in-law, Maxine Oeltjen of Mattoon and special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Evelyn Smith, brother, Danny Smith and father-in-law, Oscar Oeltjen.
The family would like to give a special thanks to their hospice nurse, Tami, Dr. Irene Dy and her staff and the girls at Niemerg’s Steakhouse.
