Douglas Ireland Shoaff, 89, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 10:10 PM Friday April 22, 2011 in Shelbyville Manor in Shelbyville.
Doug was born Dec. 29, 1921 in Shelbyville, Ill the son of Douglas Lytle and Nelle G. Ireland Shoaff.
He married Barbara Melcher July 26, 1945 in Chicago, IL, and she passed away Sept. 14, 2002.
Doug was a graduate of Shelbyville High School in 1940 and attended Eureka College in Eureka, IL to play football. He later attended Eastern Illinois University at Charleston.
He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII on the U.S.S. Twiggs.He was a crew member [and one of the few survivors at its sinking] during sea battle.
He was, formerly, employed as a typesetter at the Shelby County Leader Newspaper, assembler at the Oliver Corp and White Motor Company, both in Shelbyville, and then as a Shelby County Deputy Sheriff.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 4829 and was a member and Past Commander of the Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81 all of Shelbyville.
After his working career, for several years, he lived in Houston, TX near his son.In 1995 he moved back to Shelbyville, and lived a great life enjoying the company of his nieces and nephews who looked after him, and his many friends.
Surviving are his son Michael of Stafford, TX, several nieces and nephews and great friend Kenneth Hudson of Pana, IL.
A graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM Friday April 29, 2011 in Glenwood Cemetery in Shelbyville.Arrangements are entrusted to Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.Memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville.Military rites will be performed by the Shelby County Honor Guard.
