William E. “Zero” Sands, 81, of Stewardson formerly of Shelbyville passed away at 10:50 a.m. Friday (August 26, 2011) in the Shelby Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Shelbyville with his son Mike Sands officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before service time Thursday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. He was born in Decatur on March 2, 1930 to Ross and Flora (Sayers) Sands.
He is survived by his wife, Fiala; brother, Robert (Shari) Sands of Shelbyville; daughters, Victoria Dixon of Arlington, VA and Kristi (Jim) Bright of Creve Coeur, IL; sons, Mike (Brenda) Sands of Shelbyville, James Sands of Pana, Tracy (Carla Gibson) DeVore of Shumway and Tony DeVore of Beecher City; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He worked for Oliver in Shelbyville and retired from GE in Mattoon after 25 years. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 81 of Shelbyville. He was a member of the Shelbyville Moose Lodge and the Eagles Club of Mattoon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman most of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Scott, son-in-law and one great-granddaughter.
