Col. Leslie C. Robertson, USAF (retired), of Tower Hill, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015.
Les, Caroll, Robbie or the Colonel depending on what stage of his life you knew him from – was born on December 25, 1921 in Cowden. He attended elementary school and high school in Cowden and then went on to Eastern Illinois State Teacher College in Charleston. From there he enlisted in the Army Aviation Cadet Program in 1942 and entered active duty on August 7, 1943 in the Army Air Corps.He concluded his career in the Air Force and retired a full Colonel with more than 32 years of service to his country.
He met his true love, Annabelle Borton while in school at Charleston.They were married on April 7, 1944 and were together for 57 years before she passed away in 2001.
Les believed in volunteer service and was a Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Instructor, and was active in the Tower Hill Lions Club, DAV, VFW, and the Tower Hill Methodist Church. He also served as a 4H Leader in Shelby County for over 50 years and assisted with several state winning teams and as the horse superintendent for the Shelby County Fair.
He is preceded in death by his wife Annabelle and two brothers – George and Harold (Barlow) Robertson. He is survived by his son, William Robertson and wife Mary Ann from Stuarts Draft, VA; his daughter Carol McNeel (Robertson) and husband Buddy from New Castle, CO and sister Eileen Wiley of Shelbyville. He was very proud of all his 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and loved to talk about all of their accomplishments and achievements.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Tower Hill United Methodist Church, with Pastor David Hutton officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in the Tower Hill Cemetery with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Shelby County 4H Foundation, Les & Annabelle Robertson scholarship fund.
