Harold O. Redicks, 84 of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 4:28 AM Thursday Sept. 15, 2011 in Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville.
Harold was born June 17, 1927 in Oakland, IL the son of Neal and Merlie Sims Redicks.
He married Frieda L. Kerkhoff on Sept. 1, 1951 in Broadlands, IL.
Harold was the valedictorian at Oakland High School in the Class of 1945.After graduation, he entered the United States Navy.While in the Navy, he attended St. James College in Minneapolis, MN; attended Iowa State University in Ames, IA; attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence, KS; attended Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute, IN; and entered into the Navy flight school in Los Alamitos, CA.He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 as an apprentice Seaman V-5 with the WWII Victory Medal. He then enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves and served until 1952.He received his Bachelors Degree in Education from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston, IL.He received a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Illinois in 1952.
Harold then began his teaching career first in Allerton, IL, where he taught math and science and coached the basketball team.He then came to Shelbyville High School where he taught math and science, and coached both the baseball and football teams.For many years he was a high school football and basketball referee.At about this time, Harold became the Assistant County Superintendent of Schools for four years under Superintendent Ralph Cox.He began teaching at Moulton Junior High School in Shelbyville and then became the Principal at the Moulton School until his retirement in 1986.
During his summers away from teaching Harold supervised the Summer Recreation Program in Shelbyville’s Forest Park, and he loved to hunt fish and play golf. Harold was a long time Chicago Cubs Fan.
He was a member of the Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81and the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Shelbyville.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Regional School District and the Shelby County Board of Directors.
Surviving are his wife Frieda; daughters: Connie(Alan) Phelps of Neoga, IL, Paula(Ted) Eissfeldt of Bloomington, IL, Mary (John) Parkesof Camargo, IL and Heidi Bunton of Shelbyville; grandchildren: Tracy Harpster, Erin Lawler, Ashley Jansen, Lyndsay Rardin, Lauren May, John Delanois, Alex Bunton, Claire Bunton, Lily Bunton and Chloe’ Bunton; great grandchildren: Olivia Lawler, Sophia Jansen, Charles Jansen and Audrey Jansen and sister-in-law Laura Redicks of Terre Haute, IN
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Lester Redicks, Kenneth Redicks andGerald Redicks; sister Lois Decker; half-brothers: Russell Reddick, Arthur Reddick and Lee Reddick; half sister Rubye Reddick.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday Sept. 19, 2011 in Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Shelbyville.Pastor Wade Helmkamp will officiate. Military rites will be performed by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 PM Sunday Sept. 18, 2011 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home.Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville.Memorials can be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the Senior Citizen Center.On line condolences:lockartgreenfuneralhome.com
