John Holin Prater, 99, died June 1, 2010, at the Hilton Head Hospital in Hilton Head, SC.
He was born December 29, 1910 in Cowden, Illinois.
He marriedOpal McDermith in 1933.
John enrolled in Eastern Illinois Teacher’s Union where he received an Associate degree. He continued his studies and received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Illinois and a Master’s from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He served as principal and then superintendent of District 89 in Maywood, Ill. In 1969 he became superintendent in LaGrange, Ill. He co-authored two books, one of which “Exploring Illinois” became required study for the public school system. For 65 years, John has been an active member of the Lions’ Club. Two clubs have honored him with their highest award called the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award; the last one being the Hilton Head Lions.
John and Opal retired to Tucson, Arizona in 1974. They moved to Sun City, Hilton Head, SC in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Opal, residing at Tide Pointe, Hilton Head, SC; daughter Judy Grove and husband of Bluffton, SC; son David and wife of Lewistown, Ill and son Steven and wife of Quincy, Ill., seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
We will remember John as a contributor to academia, a man of few words, and a scholar of Abraham Lincoln.

A graveside service will be held in Mound Cemetery, Cowden, Ill. on Monday June 7 at 2:00pm.Rev. Lynette DeAtley will officiate.Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM Monday until time of the graveside at Lockart & Green Funeral Home in Cowden.
