Michael A. Murphy, 67, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 3:25 AM Sunday, July 29, 2012 in Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, IL after a long and valiant battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Mike was born Nov. 14, 1944 in Chicago, IL the son of Michael and Fern Pauline Smith Murphy.

He served his country in the Seabees during the Vietnam War.

For over 30 years, Mike worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Decatur, IL while simultaneously, owning and operating M. A. Murphy Construction Company in Shelbyville. He was a member of the Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post # 81, V. F. W. Post # 4829 and the Shelbyville Moose Lodge.

Mike served as a Democratic Precinct Committeeman and on the Shelby County Sheriff’s Merritt Commission.He proudly worked countless hours on the Boarman Roxy Theater restoration project.

Mike was a fun loving, loyal friend to many, without regard to their station in life.He had a heart of gold.

Mike`s life revolved around his Family and was totally devoted to his wife and best friend, Janet, his cherished daughters and his beloved grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Heather Murphy of Shelbyville and Suzanne Short and husband Ben of Mt. Zion, IL; grandchildren, Eleanor and Everett Short; brother Richard Murphy and wife Pam of Sullivan, IL; sister Judy Shira and husband Dennis of Bloomington, IL; mother-in-law Geneva Allen; brothers and sisters- in-law: Joyce Kauke and husband Robert, Judy Gilbert and husband Barry, Jane Wehrli and husband Craig, Bruce Allen and wife Diane, and Julia Karnstedt: nieces and nephews: Robert Murphy and wife Kelli, Melinda Ohlsson, Tammy Silen and husband Mark, Sean Shira and wife Sheryl, Bryan Kauke and wife Andrea, Benjamin Gilbert, Justin Wehrli and wife Sara, Lisa Wehrli, Joseph Allen, Audrey Allen, Paul Karnstedt and Matthew Karnstedt; several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Carroll Allen, brother-in-law Hans Karnstedt and great niece Brittany Murphy.

Funeral services will held at 11:00 AM Wednesday August 1, 2012 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.Rev. Kevin Ray will officiate.Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM Tuesday in the funeral home.Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard.Memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or the Wounded Warrior Project.
