Thomas A. Moore, 78, of Cowden passed away at 9:15 a.m. Sunday (August 5, 2012) in his home.
Tom was born March 16, 1934 in Cowden the son of Cecil L. and Velma (Fry) Moore. He graduated from Cowden High School and was salutatorian of his class. Tom was the last member of the outstanding basketball starters that led Cowden to the sectionals at Huff Gym in Champaign in 1952. After graduation he attended the University of Illinois. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He graduated from Sparks Business College where he met Rita K. Finfrock. They were married December 29, 1957 in Effingham.
Tom worked many years at the State Bank of Cowden serving as president. He and his son owned and operated an insurance agency in Beecher City.
He was always a community leader. He organized the Cowden Centennial in 1972 and the Cowden Pioneer Days serving as the president for eight years.
Tom was a Boy Scout leader, served as mayor of Cowden one term, Rotarian member, organized the Covered Bridge Ruritan Club, member of the Historical Society and VFW in Shelbyville, American Legion in Beecher City, member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Little League coach and umpire for several years and head of fundraising for the Cowden Community Building.
Surviving are his wife Rita and three children, Angelia Miller and husband Larry of Lerna, Alan Moore of Cowden and Carla Williamson and husband Dan of Leavenworth, Kansas; two grandchildren, Jessica Clifford of Overland Park, Kansas and Marc Clifford of Killeen, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Tucker and Emily Clifford of Killeen, Texas; brother W.W. Moore and wife Fran of Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert E. Moore.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in Mound Cemetery, Cowden with Pastor Tim Boyd officiating. Military rites will be held by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Cowden. Memorials may be made to the Cowden First Responders or the Mound Cemetery Fund in Cowden.
