Walter Ray Miller 90 of Beecher City, IL, passed away at 2:05 AM Thursday Dec. 18, 2014 in his home surrounded by his family.Walter was born Feb. 8, 1924 in the same home in which he lived at Beecher City, the son of James Walter and Freda Ellen Sparks Miller.

He married W. June Smith on Nov. 30, 1947 in the United Methodist Church in Mattoon, IL.Together they loved and raised five children.

As he grew in love and faith, Walter followed Jesus Christ and served as a deacon of the Beecher City Church of Christ.For many years he also volunteered as a church treasurer and led a Sunday school class.

Walter graduated from Cowden High School.He was a veteran and served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. in WWII.

He grew up on the farm and continued farming all his life.He also worked at the Oliver Corp. in Shelbyville. Later, he drove a school bus for the Beecher City School District.

Walt also loved to play. He enjoyed participating in baseball and softball, and after his legs could not stand running, he umpired to stay near the game.He was an avid water-skier, hunter, fisherman and card player.

Walt volunteered as a fireman for the Beecher City Volunteer Fire Department.He faithfully supported the work of Bond Christian Service Camp in Mulberry Grove, IL and annually cooked chicken for their Labor Day celebration.

Surviving are his children: Gary Dean (Nancy) Miller of Springfield, IL, Donald Ray Miller of Beecher City, James Roy (Vicky) Miller of Beecher City, Robert Gene (Carol) Miller of Manchester, NH and Jean Ellen Miller Dunaway of Beecher City; nineteen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June; parents, James and Freda Miller; sisters: Mildred Ellen Wood and Doris Eilene Turner; daughter-in-law Anne McCarty Miller and son-in-law Franklin William Dunaway.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday Dec. 20, 2014 in the Beecher City Church of Christ.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday in the Church.Walt’s sons: Robert and Donald and Minister Dennis Warner will officiate.Burial will be in Hubbartt Cemetery near Beecher City. Memorials may be made in Walter’s memory to the Beecher City Church of Christ or to the Beecher City Kluthe Center.Arrangements are entrusted to Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Beecher City.
