Alfred James Mayer, 89, of Windsor passed away at 5:50 p.m. Sunday (June 22, 2014) at the Heartland Christian Village, Neoga.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home, Windsor. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Ash Grove Cemetery, Windsor with military rites. Memorials may be made to the Windsor Harvest Picnic Committee or Heartland Christian Village.

He was born November 8, 1924 in Tovey the son of Joseph Alfred and Clementine C (Cattinari) Mayer. He married Rose Elaine Hamilton December 14, 1949 in Springfield and she preceded him in death May 20, 2008.

He served in the US Navy during WWII and participated in the Normandy invasion. He is the last known survivor of the USS # 279 LST. He was a life member of the American Legion and served on the Windsor City Council. He was a life long farmer.

Surviving are son, Scott Mayer (Kelly) of Windsor; grandchildren, Angela Kelly (Duane) of Strasburg, Zach Mayer of Neoga and Brandon Mayer of Windsor; daughter, Susan Petty of Effingham; grandchildren, Nicole and Eleni; great-grandchildren, Maggie, Abbie and Kynzie Kelly; son-in-law, Bob Jurgens of Mattoon; life long friend, Leland Davis of Mesa, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister, Flora Willis.
