Jack Mars 85 of Lakewood, IL, passed away at 3:52 PM Wednesday Jan. 26, 2011 in his home.
Jack was born August 24, 1925 in Michigan City, IN the son of Menzo and Bethel Barker Mars.
Jack was, before anything else, a Christian and affiliated with the First Baptist Church in Shelbyville.
At eighteen he began serving his country in the United States Air Force where he learned to fly airplanes, which was his career passion. Shortly thereafter, he started and operated a crop dusting service in Arkansas. He then founded Jetway Incorporated, a lear jet transport service which flew auto manufacturing parts for Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corporation and commuter passengers, many of whom were celebrities and prominent clients, across the country and around the world.In over 40 years of flying, he never had a serious flight accident.He then retired from flying, moved to his home town of Shelbyville, and for 25 years, was a grain and livestock farmer.
In his opinion, his greatest work that of was becoming a missionary for Christ on mission trips to Guatemala and North Korea. He undertook several missions, and in Guatemala he worked to construct and establish orphanages for the children.
He married Savilla Wyatt on Dec. 21, 1950 in Indianapolis, IN and she survives.Also surviving are children: Cheri(Ed) Hicks of Newport News, VA, Denny (Erica) Mars of Franklin, TN, David (Linda) Mars of Westland MI and Stan Mars of Lakewood; eleven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sister Louise West of Shelbyville and brother Gene Mars of Shelbyville; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Harold.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday Jan. 29, 2011 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.Pastor Greg Breeden and Pastor Dan Eloe will officiate.Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to the time of the service on Saturday.Memorials can be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital or Love the Child Guatemalan Mission Fund.On line condolences can be directed to the family at www.lockartgreenfuneralhome.com
