Gertrude June (Gale) Lorton 97 of Cowden, IL passed away at 3:55 PM Sunday Mar. 21, 2010 in her home surrounded by her family.

June was born June 30, 1912 at Pekin, IL the daughter of Fernando and Gertrude Johnson Gale.

She married Woodrow W. Lorton on June 17 1939 at Canton, IL and he passed away Oct. 23, 1977.

June graduated in 1934 from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and then obtained a Masters of Arts degree from the University of Chicago.In 1937 she began teaching at Cowden High School and taught history, English, mathematics and French and girls P.E. until her retirement in 1974.June was the director of junior and senior class plays for decades.

June served in the United States Marines from October of 1943 to October of 1945. She was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, and attained the rank of Sergeant.This was accomplished while her husband Woodrow was serving as a Sergeant in the United States Army in Germany, Belgium and France during WWII.

June was a member of the United Methodist Church, D.A.R and Eastern Star Lodge all of Cowden and Pi Beta Phi sorority.She was a 60 year member of the Cowden American Legion Post #455. She especially enjoyed attending Retired Teacher Association meetings, playing “Skip Bo” with her lady friends, watching “Wheel of Fortune” and “Price is Right”, collecting poems, reading, solving cross word puzzles and eating mushrooms and chocolate.

June loved traveling.She and Woodrow drove the Alcan Highway to Alaska in a motor home, and after Woodrow’s passing, traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Greece, Egypt and Europe.

Surviving are a son David Lorton and wife Carolyn of Cowden; daughters:

Rachel Hugens and husband Patrick of Boise, Idaho and Sarah Brennan and husband Marty of Rochelle, IL; grandchildren: Gerald Lorton and wife Patricia, James Lorton and wife Jennifer, Thomas Brennan and Matthew Brennan; great grandchild Katie Lorton; nephew Forrest Gale.

June was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow, her parents Fernando and Gertrude Gale, brother Frank Carl Gale and sister Mary Gale Anderson.

She will be missed by family, friends and her many former students.She had a lasting positive influence on the many who knew and loved her.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday Mar 25, 2010 in the United Methodist Church in Cowden.Rev. Lynette DeAtley and Rev. Jon Carroll will officiate.Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden.Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden.Memorials can be made to Quad County Hospice.
