Don W. Hennings Sr., 91 of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 1:29 PM Sunday Jan. 9, 2011 in Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville.

Don was born August 31, 1919 in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois the son of Bruce and Louise Hellman Hennings.

He married Marie Thompson Mar. 27, 1943 in Tampa, Florida.

Don was a life-long grain and livestock farmer and for over 15 years worked in highway maintenance for the Illinois Dept. of Transportation out of the Shelbyville facility.He was affiliated with the First Christian Church of Shelbyville.Don was a member of the American Legion Post #81 and V.F.W. Post 4829 both of Shelbyville. He served in the United States Army during WWII as a medic and saw action in the Philippine Islands.For several years he was a loyal member of the Shelby County Honor Guard. He was a member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau and the Shelby County Saddle Club.At Shelbyville’s Sesquicentennial, Don was a member of the planning committee and drove a covered wagon in the parade.

Don is survived by his wife Marie; children: Don W. Hennings Jr. and wife Carolyn of Shelbyville, Kenneth E. Hennings of Huntingtown, MD, Larry D. Hennings and wife Marisa of Shelbyville, Mary Ann Gooding and husband Tom of Deer Creek, IL, Debbie Dilley and husband Kenneth of Sullivan, IL and Keith D. Henningsand wife Pam of Shelbyville; grandchildren: Tyna Hankins and husband Chad, Rob Hennings and wife Erin, GwenDee Billingsley and husband Brandon, Jordan Tyler Hennings, Justin Hennings, Travis Hennings, Jason Reitzel and wife Annette, Adam Reitzel and wife Ching, Jon Reitzel and wife Poyer, Kara Muellner and husband Mark, Kamie Dilley, Jodi Hennings and fiancé Rick Scott and Jami Hennings; great grandchildren: Sadie Hennings, Shawn Hennings, Nichole Logue, Meliah Hennings, Chance Billingsley, Isaac Reitzel, Daniel Reitzel, Max Reitzel, Jacob Reitzel, Gerard Reitzel, Blase Reitzel, Wyatt Reitzel, Nolan Muellner, Natalie Muellner, Nate Muellner and another great grandchild on the way; brother-in-law Bill Thompson and wife Doris and sister-in-law Maxine Strohl all of Shelbyville many nieces , nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Dale Hennings and sisters Marguerite Small and Olive Marie Hennings.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday Jan. 13, 2011 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.Rev. Kevin Ray will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday and one hour before the service on Thursday at the funeral home.Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church of Shelbyville or the Shelby County Honor Guard.
