Dr. Purshotham Das Gurujal, 82, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 12:40 PM Tuesday Sept. 9. 2014 in Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, IL
Dr. Gurujal was born January 11, 1932 in Mysore, Karnataka State, India the son of Subramanyam and Gangabayamma (Guntur) Gurujala.
He married Suryaprabha Kumari Koduru on April 27, 1961 in India.
Dr. Gurujal came from humble beginnings to graduate at the top of his class from Mysore Medical College in 1958.He arrived in the United States of America in July of 1964.He started his practice in Jacksonville, Florida.A year later, in 1965, he brought his wife and son to the United States.In 1967, he moved to Flint, Michigan where his youngest son was born.After several years, including a position as Medical Director for the VA Hospital and Director of Health Services at Southern Illinois University, he moved his practice to an area he was proud to call home, Shelbyville.He started his practice in April of 1974 and continued practicing internal medicine until his passing.Dr. Gurujal loved, and was dedicated to, each and every one of his patients.Known for making house calls reminiscent of an era gone long ago, Dr. Gurujal will be fondly remembered as a simple country doctor, a distinction he would be proud to bear.
Surviving are his wife Kumari; children: Harsha (Susie) Gurujal of Danville, IL and Dr. Ravi Gurujal of Detroit, MI; grandchildren: Caleb, Robyn and Rosemary; sisters: Rajamma Gudipati and Umadevi (Subramanyam) Guntur; brother Narahari (Carin) Gurjala.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.
A visitation will be held for family and friends on Friday Sept. 12, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.Memorials may be given in Dr. Gurujal`s memory to “Doctors Without Borders”.
