O. Francis Evans 83 of Cowden, IL, passed away at 8:05 PM Thursday April 22, 2010 in his home surrounded by his family.

Francis was born Sept. 7, 1926 in Fayette Co. the son of Charles Boyd and Bertha Emiline Julius Evans.

He married Sally Banning Dec. 2, 1946 in Cowden, IL.

Francis was raised on his family farm and served in the United States Navy during WWII.In his younger years he worked numerous jobs, two of which, were working for his brother-in-law August Kottwitz and highway construction.In 1961, he started Francis Evan’s Lime and Fertilizer Service with one spreader truck.He continued to operate the business until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member and deacon of the First Christian Church of Cowden. He was a member of the N.R.A. and a staunch Republican.He was a former member of the Cowden Rotary Club.He was a Gideon and formerly served on the Bank of Cowden Board of Directors, Cowden-Herrick Unit School Board of Directors and Cowden Village Board of Directors.Frances was a member of the Sarver-Guthrie American Legion Post #839 of Herrick, IL, and a life member of V. F. W. Post 4829 of Shelbyville.

He was an avid gardener, golfer, hunter and bowler.

Surviving are his wife Sally; children all of Cowden: Arline Evans, Cindy Moore and husband Jim, Barbara Bennett and husband Ernie, Marsha Mahaffey and husband Monte “Zonk” and Joe Evans and wife Denise; thirteen grandchildren;twenty-seven great grandchildren; sister Fairie Jane Sellenberg of La Porte, IN; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild, one great grandchild, brother Charles W. Evans and two sisters Mildred Kottwitz and Donna Tucker.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM Monday April 26, 2010 in the First Christian Church of Cowden. Pastor Tim Boyd and Pastor Kevin Bonifacius will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 PM Sunday in the Church.Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Military rites will be performed by the Sarver-Guthrie American Legion Post #839 of Herrick.Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden is entrusted with arrangements.Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church of Cowden or the Gideons.
