David L. Elam 73 of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 10:24 PM Tuesday August 10, 2010 in Mattoon Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mattoon, IL.
David was born Oct. 1, 1936 in Decatur, IL the son of Lauren (Doc) and Erma Stevens Elam.
David graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in 1954 and then later from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL.
David served his country as a career seaman for 20 years in the United States Navy, retiring on Mar. 21, 1977.He then taught math, history and social studies at Stewardson-Strasburg High School and coached grade school basketball teams.Later, David worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a ranger on Lake Shelbyville.He was avid gardener and mushroom hunter.
David married Nancy Webster on Mar. 10, 1960 in Charleston, IL and she survives,Also surviving are sons David Ross Elam and wife Debbie of Windsor, IL, Steven Elam and wife Kelly of Mattoon, IL and Greg Elam and wife Anita of Oregon, WI; grandchildren: Christopher Elam, Brittany Elam, Chiane Elam, James Elam and Hannah Elam; sisters: Bunny Elam Dodson and husband Terry of Spencer, IA, Sally Elam Jones and husband Jerry and Cathy Elam Barger and husband Greg of Shelbyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother James Elam and brother and sister-in-law Dick and Millie Elam.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday August 21, 2010 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.Pastor Don Pankey will officiate.Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of the service. United States Flag presentation will be made by the Shelby County Honor Guard.Memorials can be made to Lincolnland Hospice or to the Cancer Center of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System, Coles County.
