Peter V. Curl 89 of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 8:50 PM Monday May 17, 2010 in the Shelbyville Manor, in Shelbyville.He had been a resident of Shelby County for almost a year.
Peter Voris Curl was born April 23, 1921 in Cambridge, Massachusetts the son of Mervin James and Grace V. (Brown) Curl.He grew up in Massachusetts, and graduated in 1939 from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1943, and served over two years active duty in Britain, Belgium and Germany in an ordinance battalion.After the war, Peter attended graduate school at Cornell University where he received his Ph.D. in 1951.Peter then took a position in the Historical Office of the Department of State where he worked for twenty-two years.Peter took an early retirement in September of 1975 to help care for his ailing mother Grace, a native of Windsor, Illinois.He continued to live in Washington, D.C. until May of 2009 when he moved to Shelbyville, Illinois.
One of Peter`s great loves in life was trains. For Peter, being stopped in traffic at a railroad crossing was not an inconvenience, but a delight.As a child he looked forward to summer vacation when he and his sister would ride the train from Massachusetts to Windsor, Illinois to visit his maternal grandparents Frank and Annette Brown.His interests were scholarly, and included the American Civil War as well and ancient history.As an avocation he wrote an abridgement of Homerís Iliad.He read widely, andhad and extensive library covering such diverse topics as history, literature and mountain climbing.He taste in music ran to the classical, and was a devotee of Wagner.
He is survived by his cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Huldah Curl of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Private family commemoration of Peter`s life will be held at a later date.Arrangements are entrusted to Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.
