Edna Charles, 82, of Effingham, IL, formerly of Shelbyville, IL, passed away on Sept. 13, 2011 in St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL
Edna was born June 5, 1929 at Salem, IL to Ernest and Edna Olive Nettles Smith.
She married Don Owens July 16, 1948.She later married Kenneth “Chuck” Charles on March 23, 1970.
Edna’s family was always her first priority.She always provided a loving home for her family.Formerly, she worked as a dispatcher for the Piatt County Sheriffs Department; was a Certified Nursing Assistant in a nursing home at Arthur, IL; worked in P&M Upholstery Shop at Fisher, IL; worked at P&M Lock Shop in Lubbock, TX and finally, assisted her husband, Chuck by organizing and keeping all of the cemetery records of Glenwood Cemetery in Shelbyville while Chuck was sexton.
Edna was a member of the Shelby County Genealogical Society and the Paxton Eastern Star Lodge.
She loved sewing, crafting wooden toys for the children, genealogy, and card playing.
Surviving are her daughters: Linda (Philip) Koeberlein of Williamsville, IL and Nancy (Larry) McDonald of Indianapolis, IN: step children: Celena Charles of Williams Bay, WI, Karen June Stevens, Teresa Charles and Kenneth (Debbie) Charles all of Pique, OH, two grand children; several step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren;
brothers: Elmer (Cindy) Smith of Mattoon, IL, Richard (Sally) Smith of Mattoon, IL , Raymond (Doris) Smith of Enid, OH and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers: George Smith, Leroy Smith and Delmar Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday Sept. 17, 2011 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.The Rev. Paul Bauer will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM Friday. Eastern Star rites will be held at 7:45 PM Friday in the funeral home.Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Beecher City, IL.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Delmar Smith Scholarship Fund c/o First State Bank of Beecher City, 101 S.
