Emory “Pete” Butler 93 of Shelbyville, IL passed away at 6:58 AM Monday Feb. 28, 2011 in Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, IL.

Emory was born Mar. 7, 1917 near Gays, IL the oldest son of Ward and Julia Carter Butler.

Emory graduated from Mattoon High School at the age of seventeen.He attended Electrical/Welding School in Chicago, IL then drove a semi-truck for Western Pacific Railroad in San Jose, CA for two years.In January of 1941 he served his country by joining the United States Army.He completed basic training at Camp Frances E. Warren in Cheyenne, WY.He then was promoted to Buck Sergeant.He transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.After further training he was transferred to Pine Camp, NY where he was promoted to Staff Sergeant.After more training, he and his unit was transferred to Indian Town Gap, PA, and was promoted to Tech. Sergeant.He was then transferred to Ft. Dix, New Jersey where he was promoted to Master Sergeant.From there he was transferred to Shanks, NY where he got on a ship to be stationed at Stanton, England and thentrained for the D-Day Invasion of France.Emory’s unit was in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.He was awarded five Bronze Stars and one Silver Star and was wounded twice during his military career.He later served in the Korean War.He then returned to Shelbyville to live, work and raise his family.

He married Martha Perry on April 4, 1942 while he was stationed at Pine Camp, NY.

Emory was employed at the Oliver Corp. in Shelbyville until it’s closing and then worked for the Shelby County Highway Dept.He also opened an upholstery shop at his home with wife Martha and operated it for 45 years.

Surviving are his loving wife Martha; daughter Marilyn Easter and husband Cliff of Corinth, MS; grandchildren: Linda Gill and husband Jim, Cliff Easter Jr.and wife Susan, Elizabeth Vincent and husband Wayne; great grandchildren: James Gill, Jeff Gill, Jennie Easter, Jade Easter, Jenna Easter, Jordan Burger, Zach Vincent, Noah Vincent and Alex Vincent; great great grandchildren: Bentley Kae Ross and Skylar Redman; brothers Otis Butler and wife Jean of Decatur, IL, Ray Butler of Mattoon, IL and Virgil Butler of Shelbyville; sister Betty Plummer and husband Floyd of Mattoon.

He was preceded in death by his son James Daryl Butler, great grandson Breidan Dane Ross, his parents, sister Lulu Marie Hamilton and brother Charles Robert Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday Mar. 3, 2011 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.Rev. Mark Sanders will officiate.Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until time of the service on Thursday.Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Military rites will be performed by the Shelby County Honor Guard.
